Carved from the rugged Chiricahua Mountains, the intimidating spire, Thunder Peak, slashes the sky, haunting the southern reaches of the Arizona Territory and looming over Itza Chu Canyon.  Staked in the darkest corner of Thunder Peak’s shadow lies the Tamm Ranch and Orchard, run by Civil War veteran Jonas Tamm.

On the bright spring morning of her seventh birthday, Casey's adoptive father, Jonas, promises that if she ever sees something unique or magical in the valley, he will tell her a secret about her true parents.  Thrilled at first, Casey treats it like a game, but dead end after dead end leads her to give up searching before the summer even ends.

As the wonder years pass Casey grows fit and strong.  Much stronger than boys her own age.  Then, the summer of her fourteenth birthday, Casey finally sees something while out exploring with her friends.  Something her friends can not see and mistake for thunder- a fleet of unicorns storming though the woods, and abruptly remembers the promise.

With the secret finally within her grasp she races home, never suspecting that there isn’t just one secret, there are many, and that lurking in the shadows of the mysterious, magical world she desperately seeks to enter is Nightblade, a sinister creature of fang and claw determined to see her dead at any cost. 

Just as unicorns are to horses, the Cree are to wolves.  Nightblade is their chieftain.  Calculating.  Powerful.  Teeth painted with a paralyzing venom.  Yet perhaps most frightening of all, is his ability to leap from shadow to shadow, bringing the potential for instant death to every dark corner of the battlefield.

Long ago he came to Itza-Chu Canyon on a mission to destroy Casey.  He was thwarted.  His physical body destroyed in a magic dead realm, Nightblade was exiled, doomed to spend the rest of his days wandering the canyon as a ghost. 

When fate mysteriously sends a fleet of unicorns through the gate that links Earther to Leutia, Nightblade acts swiftly, ensuring that one of them gets left behind.  Scheming from the shadows, he works to subvert Casey's attempts to send the unicorn home, trying to harness just enough energy to manifest his physical form and attack the unicorn.  Feeding on the faerie steed will revitalize NIghtblade with blood magic and restore his powers.

Once reborn, he can finish his mission, destroy Casey and go home to claim his reward...

Jonas took his grief and anger west into the dangerous Arizona Territory, where he discovered a hidden canyon under the gaze of a haunted mountain.  An isolated cut stricken with erratic storms, cloaked in ghost stories and populated by outlaws and fugitives. 

The moment Jonas found the abandoned homestead in the deepest, darkest corner of the stormy canyon, he knew he was home.  What he didn’t know, was that the magic surrounding the mountain was real.  When it connected with him, Jonas learned many of the canyon’s secrets and rediscovered happiness, only to have it ripped from him a second time.  Now, Jonas carries and hides his heartbreaks as bravely as he can.   As a man must do– when he becomes a father.
